About

The Story of the Seed is a biology project spanning the whole year in which students plant seeds and follow the progress of their growth before finishing with the product they started with- seeds. By following the plant’s journey as it grows, students get a wholesome experience of observing new life, and learn biology with lessons from Mr. Bursch’s biology class tied in. At the beginning of the school year, students received seeds of the Brassica oleracea species - for our group’s project, collards – and planted them, testing the seeds germination with an experiment of their own. After the first experiment and germination process end, students continue to take care of the surviving plants until they are moved into pots under grow lights. When the plants are large enough, the best ten plants are transported to the main Willow glen garden. Then, students monitor the growth of their plants along the life cycle, until eventually flowering, fruiting, and becoming a seed once again. Along the way, students will be making hypotheses, recording data, drawing conclusions and more, which will be presented in a blog showing the story of the seed.
